The constant increase in the proportion of the elderly population is the most important demographic trend of our time. As the birth rate is decreasinges and the average life expectancy is increasing, all the countries experience changes in the age structure of the population and the steady growth in the share of elderly people in the age structure of the the population. This process is called the demographic aging of the population. The main factors in the aging of the population are the processes of reduced fertility and increased life expectancy. Reduction of mortality at younger ages helps to rejuvenate the age structure of the population. The increase in life expectancy in the elderly contributes to the aging of the population only at a very low birth rate. In rural areas, due to the migration of young people, the aging of the population is increasing. The aging of the population raises a number of economic and social problems: the increased demographic burden on the able-bodied population, which complicates the solution of problems of material security for older people; there are difficulties associated with social security, the organization of work and leisure, medical and social services for the elderly. The article examines the main characteristics of the quality of living of the elderly population in Gorny Region of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). After analyzing the results, the authors come to the conclusion that the most typical risks of the elderly are: material unhappiness, poor health and the risk of premature death, as well as the risk of social exclusion
